Final exam_part#2

Part#2 It is the year 2025. Now I am working at English kindergarten. I also tutor as a second job. I have different teaching ways between kindergarten and tutoring. I place emphasis on making the natural environment that children are exposed English. Children’s language acquisition ability is better than adult. To maximize their ability, I offer some situations that they can learn English naturally. In school, Grammar Teaching Method and audio-lingual teaching method are still used today. So I try to use Communicative Language Teaching method in my class. There are various components of Communicative Language Teaching. One of them is spontaneous use of language. I think it is the most important component of CLT when we learn language. And in my class, children are using –pad(like iPad). It makes to attract children. Children can use it in creative ways without being taught. It is like SOLE(self organized learning English). When I have taken the TESOL, the most memorable video is Jessica’s daily affirmation video. It is about self-efficacy. Self-efficacy predicts achievement, learning, self-regulation, and motivation. And I think it also be able to have confidence. Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. Before starting my class, to have motivation and confidence, children and I say, “I love English! I like my English class! I am a good student/teacher! I can do everything!” something like that. When I see them who are doing self-efficacy, I have intrinsic motivation for teaching. We do self-efficacy everyday so I can avoid burnout as a teacher. As I mentioned, I have a second job. It is an English tutor for middle school and high school students, not young children. I think middle school and high school students need more systematical teaching ways. Unfortunately, test is still important in Korea. So I am tutoring school class contents. At first, I use flip teaching for preview their school class contents. Here is how it is happening for real: kids watch lectures and video at home, class is for hands-on work and face to face interaction with teacher/peers. This method was such a booming topic in education. However, just a few schools using this method in Korea, almost school still use Grammar Teaching Method like only lecture for test. I am using not only flip teaching but also learning style in my tutor. It is not how smart you are that matters, what really counts are how you are smart. All human begins have multiple intelligences. It is learning styles. Actually, it is hard to apply in school, because there are too many students who have different learning styles. But tutoring is one to one system. Now I know and understand my student’s own learning style and I am teaching the perfect way to my student. I am using some teaching ways that I have learned in TESOL program. And furthermore, I will make my own teaching way.

-what did think as you watched your videos? First, my voice is too quiet so I cannot hear well. I've never seen I speak English. It is first time to see I speak English. When we took video, I really don't like it. But it is good activity to get motivation. After I saw my videos, I thought I have to practice speaking English more than now. -How could you have improved what you said? Maybe there are too many grammar mistakes. And my voice is too quiet. I have more confidence. I also have to try to speak English even I am scary about speaking English. After finish this TESOL program, I'm going to attend the institute for improve my speaking skills.

I think 'ESLGames Downloadables' site is useful to teach English.
It is easy to use and young students can learn with fun.


In this week, I've checked the resources. Storybooks are the most interesting resource to me. I think storybooks feel free to study English.
Actually, I still not check all of resources. I will check all the resources whenever I have time. Thank you for your useful resources.

Week#10

•Which sites and resources were of the most/least interest as a language learner? Why?
Last week, we have spend an hour in the computer lab. I visited "Lyricstraining.com". This site have lots of music videos. Because I like songs, I was the most interest in this site. You can choose your favorite song and you fills the gaps the lyrics. If you like songs, this site is interesting to you. It is also help to improve your listening skills I think.


•What did you enjoy (or not enjoy) about spending time inthe computer lab vs. the classroom?
Actually, spending time in the computer lab is more enjoyable than the classroom. But it is not effective than the classroom. When you spend time in the computer lab, you can choose the way what you want to learn. When you spend time in the classroom, you can learn more systematically.




Because my computer is broken, I could not see all of sites and resources. So I cannot answer the all of questions. Im sorry about that.

Week#9

In this week, we have watched two video. I think these video are the most interesting topic. First video's results of study is amazing. Through this video, I thought children has an infinite of possibilities.
And second video is also intersting. At first, I think the teaching way is difficult to apply Korean education system. But the result was successful. If the teaching way is widely used in Korea, lots of Korean students can have interesting in study.

Assignment#6

In this week, we learned about learning style.
I am right-brain dominance and intrapersonal learning style. And I am field independent person.
When I study for exam, I read and write continueously. Sometimes I use images or pictures. So I am a little visual-spatial.
In my school days, almost teachers write the board and then students write down their notebook.
In Korea, there's no various teaching style.
Everybody has different learning styles. I'll try to apply every learning styles in my class as a teacher.

Assignment4

We discussed about motivation.
I think I am a little motivate person.
But when I exercise such as walking and running, I feel comfortable. I need my own time. So that time is precious to me. It is for reason of intrinsic thing.
TESOL program is for reason of extrinsic motivation. If I finish this program, I get certification.
I really want to be a motivate person. I will always try to have motivation, not just burn out.

  • What do you remember (if anything) about your early L1 learning experiences as a child?
- Actually I do not remember anything when I learned L1.
  • What experiences have you had observing other young children learn L1 or L2? What observations have you made?
    - My cousin start to learn English(L2) when she was 5 years old. She went to English kindergarten. At that time, she cannot speak Korean perfectly, but that was good experience to her. Because she was happy about learn new language.
  • Can you think of situations when your comprehension exceeded your production ability (in L1 or L2)?
        - Now I am learning TESOL program. This situation is exceed my production                ability...
  • In your language learning environments how were comprehension and production balanced?
          - My language learning environment is more focused on comprehension. We do not               have enough chance to converse with foreigners.
  • How do you think they should be balanced? What factors affect this?  (e.g. age, level, type of content)
          - I do not understand perfectly in this question.
  • Children tend to learn language through extensive imitation and playful repetition of language forms.  Can you think of any situations in which you did (or still do) this?
          - When I was young, I learned English through imitation. Sometimes I still learn                       English through imitation. For example, I want to use some sentences when I see a               movie. Then, I write and remember the sentence. After that, I use the sentence                     proper situation.
  • Do you 'think' differently when speaking in L1 vs. L2?  
        - It is different of course. When I speak Korean(L1), I do not think any grammar or         pronunciation. But I always think grammar and pronunciation when I speak                   English(L2).
  • Based on your experiences, how do you think Asians and Westerners think and communicate differently?
- I stayed in America for 8 months. Westerners always greet even stranger. But K Korean do not do this.
  • Were you reminded of any personal experiences when viewing the video and presentation?
- I am sorry I cannot remember that I experienced.
  • Do you think these differences are increasing or decreasing over time?
- I think these differences are decreasing over time. These days children have more chance to meet and converse with foreigners. While we were focused on comprehension, new generations are more balanced in comprehension and production.
  • How much do you see the world in a typically Asian way as described in the video?
- Also I cannot understand this question.





SHORT REFLECTION
-I like week#3 class. We saw some video. It is good helper to understand content.
I still difficult to discussion, but it is also good helper to remember content.





What materials, tools, and/or sites have been most useful to you as a language learner?
- I think story books and movies are useful to me. These two ways can be interested in English. Attract interest is the best way to learn English I think.

Assignment2

1.Can you think of times when you learned language by different historical approaches...
-Grammar Translation Method?
-Audiolingual?
-Communication Language Teaching?
     --I have learned just two methods in my school days. Grammar Translation Teaching also learned. When I was university student, i have some classes with foreigners.

2.Which have you experienced the most?
     --Grammar Translation Teaching is the most experience I have. Actually, we have lots of exam. So we study for exam. I also study for exam. That is why I have the most experience by Grammar Translation Teaching.

3.Give examples of activities that fit into the different methods.
      --Grammar Translation Teaching is the most teaching way in schol. And in my institute, we use machine that foreigner speaks first and then students record what they speak. This way is good method that fit into audiolingual. To improve students' speaking skills, discussion is the most effective activity.

4.In what ways were they effective or not?
      --I think Communication Translation Teaching is the most effective to improve language skills. We already learn language by Grammar Translation Teaching and Audiolingual. These two methods are not effective. If we meet foreigners in real life, we cannot speak English.

5.How do you (will you) balance theae approaches as a teacher?
      --We already learn language by Grammar Translation Method and Audiolingual in school. So I will focuse on Communication Translation Teaching. I will have lots of discussion classes. Korean students do not have enough time to discuss and converse in English. I think discussion is the most effective way to improve their speaking skills.
